Fun Working at Epic

My new job at Epic is going well. I'm out of training and digging in to actual work, and I'm starting to really like what I do. I get to analyze problems and write code every day, which feels like a good fit for me. Things move at a faster pace and involve more collaboration than I had in science research, and so far I really like the stimulation. It's also nice to know that the work I do benefits people by supporting clinicians and medical staff. The more time I spend on my work, the more I'm glad I found this company.

Epic likes to have fun with what they do, and you can see some of this in the design of the campus. I work in one of the older parts of campus (dating from around 2005), and it has some pretty cool art and architecture. The building on the left of this picture is the nearby cafeteria where I usually get lunch, and the one on the right is a regular office building.

Every building has a theme for its decorations, and some of the themes are pretty fantastical. There are dragons lurking in a moat,

and just generally popping up where you least expect them.

Dragons aren't the only artwork, of course. Epic constantly collects interesting art. I'm partial to the moving wind sculptures, myself.

As they built more buildings, they committed to the themes more and more. Just south of where I work, the Farm campus has office buildings that look like a stable, barn, and shed from the outside. In warm weather, there are even some sheep that graze there.

This building is one of my favorites. It's called “Fortress” for reasons I'm sure you can guess.

Between my office and Fortress, there's another large cafeteria called King's Cross and styled after the London station. There's even a replica train car outside, which I found can be a cozy place to hole up when you need to concentrate on some work.

Before you look at this last photo, go back up to the first panorama. There's a hallway connecting the two buildings that runs under the waterfall you see in the middle. In December, when the sun was setting really early, I managed to catch a sunset through it.
